CNC-Machined Cold Plates for AI Servers: RFQ Guide

Cold-plate quotations slow down when the model defines shape but not the thermal interface, fluid boundary, sealing concept or inspection scope. Those requirements must be separated before machining begins.

Quick answer

What should an AI server cold-plate RFQ define?

Separate the thermal interface, fluid boundary, sealing concept, joining responsibility and required evidence before the machining scope is quoted.

  • Define heat-source footprints, contact surfaces, mounting stack and ports
  • Specify coolant, sealing method, material, finish, masking and cleanliness needs
  • Distinguish dimensional inspection from leak, pressure and thermal testing

Start with the thermal and mechanical interfaces

Identify the heat-source footprint, contact region, mounting pattern, allowable stack height and the surfaces that control contact. Flatness and surface condition should be applied where they support the thermal interface, not copied across the entire component.

State whether the RFQ covers only CNC-machined plates, covers or manifolds, or a complete joined and tested assembly. Joining, sealing and leak-test requirements must be confirmed as separate process responsibilities.

Define the fluid boundary and ports

Provide channel geometry, port standards, flow direction, fluid type and the intended sealing method. Mark O-ring grooves, gasket lands and threaded ports as functional characteristics and identify any prohibited burrs or edge conditions.

If internal channels become enclosed after machining, explain the planned joining route and the cleanliness evidence required after that operation.

Choose material and finish as a system decision

Material, coolant chemistry, joining process and surface finish affect one another. Specify the exact alloy and identify any conversion coating, plating, passivation, masking or bare contact zones.

Do not select a finish only for appearance. Confirm compatibility with the thermal interface, seals, fasteners and fluid circuit before the drawing is released.

Agree inspection evidence before production

A dimensional report can cover contact surfaces, mounting features, ports, grooves and other agreed characteristics. Leak, pressure, cleanliness or thermal-performance testing is different from dimensional inspection and should be defined separately when required.

State the acceptance criteria, sample plan, report format and process stage for each type of evidence.
