How to Prepare a CNC Machining RFQ
A useful CNC machining quotation starts with enough information to assess geometry, process risk, quality evidence and delivery—not merely a part screenshot.
Quick answer
What makes a CNC machining RFQ actionable
A useful CNC RFQ identifies the controlled part definition, material, quantity, finish and inspection expectations so manufacturability and scope can be reviewed together.
- Send a STEP or native CAD model plus a PDF drawing when available
- Identify revision, material, estimated quantity, critical features, finish and delivery stage
- A drawing is optional for the short inquiry; a part description or photo can start the discussion
Buyer answers
Questions buyers ask before sending an RFQ
Is a 3D model enough for a CNC quote?
A 3D model defines geometry, but a controlled drawing is still useful for tolerances, datums, threads, finishes and inspection notes. Send both when they are available.
What if the material or finish is not final?
State the options under consideration and the functional requirement. Hongfeng can review manufacturability, but the selected material and finish must be confirmed before production.
Can a buyer start without a drawing?
Yes. The short inquiry accepts a part description or photo. A complete quotation requires enough information to define geometry, quantity, material and the required result.

1. Send geometry and a controlled drawing
Provide a STEP or STP model for machinable geometry. Add a controlled PDF drawing for dimensions, datums, tolerances, threads, surface finish and notes that may not be fully defined in the model.
Mark the drawing revision and identify which file governs if information conflicts.
2. Define material, finish and quantity
State the exact material grade when it matters. Identify finish, color, masking and cosmetic zones. Separate prototype quantity, first order and expected repeat demand so the manufacturing route can be assessed appropriately.
3. Identify critical characteristics
Highlight interfaces that affect assembly or function. Define the datum system and the inspection evidence you need instead of applying a tight general tolerance to every feature.
4. Add project and delivery context
Include application, project stage, target date, destination, packaging needs and any requested certificate or dimensional report. These details reduce quotation assumptions.
RFQ checklist
- STEP/STP model and controlled PDF drawing
- Revision, units and material grade
- Prototype and production quantities
- Finish, masking and cosmetic requirements
- Critical dimensions and requested inspection records
- Delivery destination and timing context
