CNC Milling vs CNC Turning: How to Choose

The process choice follows the part geometry and feature relationships. Many precision parts use both milling and turning rather than fitting a single category.

When milling is the natural starting point

Milling suits prismatic parts such as housings, plates, brackets, pockets and coordinated features on several faces. Tool access, internal corners, workholding and distortion often drive the route.

When turning is the natural starting point

Turning suits parts organized around an axis: shafts, sleeves, bushings, collars and flanges. Diameter relationships, shoulders, grooves, threads and support of long or thin geometry matter.

Why hybrid parts need process planning

A turned component may also require flats or cross holes; a milled housing may include precision bores. Datum transfer between operations and inspection setups can be more important than the label used for the process.

What to provide for process review

Send the complete model and drawing, not isolated views. State functional interfaces, material, quantity and inspection requirements so the supplier can assess routing and risk.
