Edge AI Enclosures: CNC Design Checklist
An edge AI board can fit the CAD model and still overheat, misalign at the connector panel or become difficult to service. The enclosure must be reviewed as a thermal, mechanical and assembly system.
Quick answer
What should an edge AI enclosure package include?
The controlled package should connect the board, modules, connectors, thermal path, covers and service access instead of defining only the external shell.
- Include board assemblies, connector locations and keep-out zones
- Define module power, contact surfaces, airflow and thermal interface materials
- Mark gasket, grounding, masking, finish and inspection requirements
Why enclosure problems appear late
Board outlines are often available before the final heat sink, cable set, connector tolerance or mounting stack is frozen. If the enclosure is released too early, prototype changes concentrate around openings, standoffs and thermal contact surfaces.
Use a controlled interface model that includes the board, modules, connectors, fasteners, thermal materials and keep-out zones—not only the external shell.
Connect the board, connectors and enclosure datums
Choose datums that locate the board and relate connector openings to the actual board position. Oversized openings may hide variation but can conflict with sealing, appearance or strain relief.
Define standoff heights, card guides, panel thickness and mating hardware from the assembly stack. Identify which surfaces need reported dimensions during prototype inspection.
Define the heat path before adding fins
Document module power, intended thermal contact regions, interface materials, airflow direction and environmental limits. NVIDIA documentation for Jetson platforms emphasizes thermal management as part of system stability; the enclosure is one element of that complete thermal design.
Fin geometry alone does not define performance. Contact flatness, material, mounting pressure, airflow clearance and the path from the module to ambient all matter.
Treat sealing, EMI and finish as connected requirements
Gaskets, conductive contact areas, coatings and cosmetic finishes can compete for the same surfaces. Mark bare-metal contact zones, masked regions, gasket compression areas and appearance-critical faces on the controlled drawing.
If an ingress or EMC requirement applies, identify the applicable product-level verification separately. Machined dimensions support the design but do not by themselves certify the complete enclosure.
